Keys to healthy skin

There can be multiple factors involved in the cause of chronic acne, including:

  • Microbiome imbalance of the skin, including bacterial infection with propiones acne;

  • Blood sugar dysregulation caused by excess sugars (including dairy milk products) feeds acne-causing bacteria AND causes insulin spikes which inhibits the release of excess hormones in free circulation, causing androgen dominance and thus promoting acne;

  • Poor skin hygiene; infrequent facial cleansing can result in build up of toxins and dead skin cells on the skin. Use of certain cosmetics may result in stripping the natural oil barriers of the skin, making it prone to infection or excess oil production. Added chemicals in some cosmetics may also contribute to toxic burden.

  • Poor digestion and elimination can lead to build up of toxins in the skin; this is common in teenagers and young adults who have a lack of dietary fibre due to reliance on takeaway and processed foods;

  • Hormonal imbalance, especially in girls. Heavy, painful, irregular or absent menstrual periods may be a sign of hormonal imbalance which can result in hormonal acne. Hormonal testing can be done to determine the hormonal profile.

    In a naturopathic consult, we look at all of these factors to achieve a holistic and lasting resolution for the skin.
